Rural water and natural resource conservation using science

Our Roots and Purpose

WaterSphere is an initiative to support rural projects in the area of water and natural resource conservation. I started it in the ninth grade while studying at Rishi Valley School, a boarding school in rural south India.

Completed WaterSphere Projects

The Watersphere initiative supports water and conservation projects in rural India that are based on scientifically proven approaches. To date, the Watersphere initiative has supported the following projects in rural South India.

The Bio-Toilet

Like many areas in rural India, Diguvapalem lacks adequate access to public toilets. Public defecation is prevalent, even though it could lead to diseases. Diguvapalem also has a chronic water shortage.

Children’s Learning Center

Rural Chittoor district in India, where this project was implemented, does not have sufficient capacity to support the learning needs of the local elementary school population. One of the primary challenges is that children do not have space to learn and study after school.

Local Plant Nursery

One of the environmental challenges in many rural areas is the growth of invasive non-local plant species. We built a nursery to grow native plants and then planted the saplings in the local hills.

Water Purification Experiments

My research in water purification began in my 9th grade. I experimented with using naturally available coagulants to purify water in my school design & technology center.

More from WaterSphere

An initiative to share and support global projects in the area of water and natural resource conservation. I believe that combining science and local eco-friendly materials in creative ways, even on a small scale, can ultimately make a big difference in the world.

Using science creatively to conserve natural resources can have a big impact in rural areas
